If you thought that iPads have only invaded your living room, the office and the every possible place known to you. Here's more: After helping deliver a speech at the House of Commons, aiding Benz dealership and making in roads in Tihar Jail in India, the iPad will now be replacing the flying manuals at Alaska Airlines. Alaska Airlines will be the first domestic airline to do so as part of their ongoing effort to use technology to enhance flight safety, improve efficiency and protect the environment. The airlines will be issuing the 1 1/2-pound iPad instead of the 25 pounds of paper flight manuals to all its pilots, and make it mandatory for them to carry it all around. The process is likely to be complete by mid-June. This was decided after the airline did some 100 tests last spring and winter.
These iPads contain an app called GoodReader that is loaded with PDF versions of 41 flight, systems and performance manuals, reference cards, and other materials. The use of iPad will also help the pilots in updating the information with just one tap. Little surprise that the group is now working on plans to get the paper aeronautical navigation charts on to this tablet as well.
