The idea of ‘moving-out’ to the space has been enough toyed around by people, either through movies like Wall-E or creative writing. The Japanese astronaut Satoshi Furukawa wants to see how feasible this could be by attempting to grow cucumbers. He would do this right when is on board the International Space Station and believes that this would make him learn about the possibility of harvesting food when in space. He’d begin to experiment with cucumber first.
The scientist wants to study what effect the absence of gravity has on growing food. With his colleagues Russian Sergei Volkov and American Michael Fossum, the Japanese will be taking the trip skywards on Wednesday for his 6-month long mission. Apart from cucumbers, they’ll also grow some tomatoes. These men also were excited with the idea of being able to eat a cucumber tomato salad made from the veggies harvested by them for they are otherwise not allowed to eat them onboard. I wonder how these veggies are going to taste and what price will the rich guys cough up to actually have them as a souvenir.
